South African President visits the Abbey

The President of the Republic of South Africa, HE Cyril Ramaphosa, visited the Abbey on Tuesday 22nd November as part of his State Visit to His Majesty The King.

Prayers were said at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior and the President laid a wreath in honour of the fallen of the two World Wars and more recent conflicts.

He was then escorted on a tour of the Abbey by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, pausing at the memorial to former South African President and anti-Apartheid campaigner Nelson Mandela. The memorial was dedicated in the Abbey's nave in 2018 at a service held on the centenary of Mr Mandela's birth.

Following the tour, the Dean invited President Ramaphosa to sign the Distinguished Visitors’ Book.
