    Writer and Novelist

    Jane Austen is buried in Winchester Cathedral but a small tablet was unveiled to her memory in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, on 17th December 1967.

  • William Blake

    Artist and Poet

    In 1957 a larger than life size bronze bust by Epstein to the poet, painter and engraver William Blake was unveiled in Poets' Corner.

  • Dame Peggy Ashcroft

    Actor

    A memorial stone to the actress Dame Peggy Ashcroft was unveiled in Poets' Corner in 2005. The stone is near Laurence Olivier’s grave.

  • William Benson

    Abbot and Dean

    William Benson, first Dean of Westminster, is buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey (in the area formerly called the chapel of St Blaize).

  • William Camden

    Writer and Historian

    William Camden, author and antiquary, was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey. He was Head Master of Westminster School 1593-1597.

  • Robert Burns

    Poet and Composer

    A marble bust of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns is on the wall of Poets’ Corner near memorials to Shakespeare and Scottish poet James Thomson.

  • John Milton

    Writer and Poet

    John Milton, poet and writer, died in 1674 but his memorial in Poet's Corner was not erected until 1737. He has a memorial window in St Margaret's church.

  • Barton Booth

    Actor

    In the south transept is a memorial to actor Barton Booth. There is a portrait medallion with an allegorical figure crowning him with a laurel.

  • Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess of Strathmore

    Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess Dowager of Strathmore, was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey, wearing, it is said, a superb bridal dress.

  • Royal Ballet Founders

    Composer, Dancer and Musician

    In 2009 a memorial stone to four founders of the Royal Ballet, Ninette de Valois, Frederick Ashton, Constant Lambert and Margot Fonteyn, was unveiled.

  • Nicholas Rowe

    Poet and Playwright

    Nicholas Rowe, Poet Laureate and dramatist, was buried in Poets' Corner. His monument was moved to the triforium and can be seen there.

  • Nathaniel Rogers

    Doctor

    Dr Nathaniel Rogers, physician, presented a small stained glass window to Westminster Abbey. The window is in of the east aisle of the south transept.

  • Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte

    Poet and Novelist

    Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte are commemorated in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. Their stone tablet of Huddlestone stone was given by the Bronte Society.

  • Sir John Betjeman

    Writer, Poet and Broadcaster

    On a pillar in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey is a memorial to Sir John Betjeman, Poet Laureate and broadcaster.

  • John Roberts

    Politician

    Above the tomb of Geoffrey Chaucer in Poets' Corner is a white marble monument to politician John Roberts. The memorial was erected in 1776.

  • Caedmon

    Poet

    In 1966 a memorial to the early Christian poet Caedmon was unveiled in Poets' Corner. This famous Northumbrian poet died around the year A.D. 680.

  • Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning

    Writer and Poet

    The poet Robert Browning is buried in Poets' Corner. His wife, poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is buried in Florence, but is memorialised in Westminster Abbey.
