Anthony Harvey

A memorial stone for Dr Anthony Harvey, former Canon and Sub Dean of Westminster, was dedicated on 15th January 2019 in the south cloister, prior to his thanksgiving service. The inscription was cut by Abbey mason Mark Croll and reads:

Anthony Ernest Harvey 1930-2018 Canon Theologian 1982-1999 Sub-Dean 1987-1999

He was born on 1st May 1930, son of Cyril Harvey QC and his wife Nina (Darley) and was educated at Eton and Oxford. In 1957 he married Julian McMaster (died 2015) and they had four daughters. He taught at Christ Church Oxford and Wolfson College and was Warden of St Augustine's Theological College. While at the Abbey he held the posts of Steward, Archdeacon, Chronicler, Almoner, Canon Theologian and Canon Librarian. The commemoration of ten modern Christian martyrs, who have statues over the west entrance, was brought about by his efforts and he also instigated the major conservation work on the Abbey's 13th century Retable. He was a prolific author, a musician and linguist and was involved in the Faith in the City report. He was also co-president of the London Society of Jews and Christians. He died on 9th January 2018 and is buried with his wife at Willersey church in Worcestershire where he had lived during retirement.
