Archibald and Mary MacGougan

Archibald MacGougan of no. 2 Smith Square, Westminster, was buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey on 2nd February 1814 aged 39. The gravestone (next to that of Dorcas Spring which can be read) now has rather a faint inscription and includes the name of his brother John who is not buried in the Abbey. The inscription reads: 

In memory of John MacGougan of this parish who died near Hastings in Sussex on the 20th day of Dec 1807 aged 46 years. Also to Mary his wife who beneath this stone is interred who departed this life on the 29th day of December 1813 aged 50 years. Here also is deposited the remains of Mr Archibald MacGougan, Royal Navy, brother of the above John MacGougan who died the 26th day of January 1814 aged 39 years. Also the body of Mary Ann daughter of the above John and Mary MacGougan, spinster, who departed this life on the 29th November 1816 aged 20 years. If thou knowest their virtues, imitate them. If thou knowest their errors, avoid them

Mary was buried on 5th January 1814. Archibald served on the ships Caroline and Doris and died unmarried. His nephew John, son of his brother John, proved the will which mentioned his brothers Angus of the island of Gigha in Scotland, Nevin and Donald and his sister Anne. Mary Ann, Archibald's niece, lived at 36 Howland Street and was aged 22 at her death, rather than 20, according to the Abbey funeral book.
