Armed Forces memorial

In the south cloister is a memorial to members of the United Kingdom Armed Forces, both regular and reserve, who have lost their lives in conflicts since the end of the 1939-1945 war. It also remembers those of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the Merchant Navy who supported them. The memorial was unveiled on 29th October 2008 by the Princess Royal and the sculptor was Tom Phillips, R.A. The centre text is in welded steel, with a brown covering made from earth gathered world wide from battle sites from different eras ie. from Battle, site of the battle of Hastings in 1066, Agincourt and the Somme. The fifteen samples were mixed and ground together to make a pigment bound in acrylic resin. Cut into the stonework around this, repeated four times, is the motto of the Armed Forces Memorial Appeal:

REMEMBER THEM. TODAY. TOMORROW. FOREVER.

The main inscription reads:

Remember the men and women of the Armed and Auxiliary Forces who lost their lives in times and places of conflict since the Second World War
