Charles Whitworth, Baron of Galway

Charles Whitworth, Baron of Galway, diplomat, died on 23rd October and was buried on 6th November 1725 in the south choir aisle of Westminster Abbey, aged 50, in front of Admiral Shovell's monument and near to that of George Stepney. He has no monument or marker.

He was the eldest of six sons of Richard Whitworth of Blore Pike in Staffordshire and Adbaston in Suffolk, and his wife Anne (Mosley). Educated at Westminster School and Cambridge he became secretary to George Stepney, envoy at Berlin, and succeeded him in that office. In 1704 he was appointed envoy extraordinary to Russia. Later he was seconded to The Hague and was a distinguished diplomat and ambassador. In 1720 he married Magdalene or Madeleine de Sallengre de Grifoort but they had no children. He was Member of Parliament for Newport in the Isle of Wight and in 1721 he was created Baron Whitworth of Galway in Ireland. His will was proved by his brother Francis. His nephew Sir Charles Whitworth was also a politician.
