Evan Nepean

The Reverend Evan Nepean (pronounced Nep-een) was Canon of Westminster from 1860-1873 and is buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey with his wife. His family came originally from St Just in Cornwall. He was a son of Sir Evan Nepean 1st Bt. and his wife Mary (Skinner) and was educated at Eton and Cambridge. From 1830-1873 he was minister at Grosvenor chapel in London and from 1831-1861 was rector of Heydon in Norfolk. He was also a chaplain to Queen Victoria. By his wife Anne, daughter of Sir Herbert Jenner, judge, whom he married on 15th September 1832, he had 8 sons and 6 daughters.

His sons were William, Evan Colville, Francis, Molyneux, Montagu, Adolphus, Charles and another whose name is not known. Montagu and Charles served consecutively as vicars of Lenham in Kent. His daughters were Emily, Annie, Augusta Harriet, Margaret Emma, Mary Isabella and Frederica. Three children married at the Abbey: Margaret to Albert Peareth, Evan Colville to Elizabeth Jenner and Augusta to William Paley. Four children of Evan Colville were baptised in the Abbey between 1865 and 1871 and a daughter of Augusta.

The grave inscription reads:

IHS. Evan Nepean Canon of this Church. Born 20 April 1800, Died 13 March 1873. Also Anne Nepean his beloved wife Born 9 May 1808, Died 6 Sept. 1871. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord
