George Fitzroy, Duke of Northumberland
George Fitzroy, Earl and Duke of Northumberland, was buried on 11th July 1716 in the vault of the Duke of Albemarle in the north aisle of Henry VII's chapel. A stone with names of those buried in this vault was added in 1869. He and his first wife are mentioned:
George Fitzroy Duke of Northumberland 1716
Catherine Wheatley his wife 1714
He was the third son of Charles II by his mistress Barbara Villiers (later Duchess of Cleveland) and was known first as George Palmer, as she was married at this time to Roger Palmer, Earl of Castlemaine. Born at Oxford on 28th December 1665 he was created Baron of Pontefract, Viscount Falmouth and Earl of Northumberland in 1674. In 1683 he was created Duke of Northumberland. He served in the army as Lt. General and was Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards, Gentleman of the Bedchamber to James II, Constable of Windsor Castle and Park and Chief Butler of England. His first wife Catherine was daughter of Robert Wheatley and her first husband was Thomas Lucy. She was buried on 3rd June 1714. Her sister Anne married Lord George Douglas and sister Elizabeth married a brother of the Duke of Berwick. All were at some time in the Convent at Hammersmith. George's second wife (not mentioned on the stone) was Mary, daughter of Henry Dutton and sister of Captain Mark Dutton. She died at Frogmore, Windsor and was buried in the vault on 11th September 1738. He had no legitimate children so his line became extinct at his death.
His brother Charles Fitz Roy, Duke of Cleveland is also buried in the Abbey.
