Harold Costley-White

The ashes of Harold Costley-White, Canon of Westminster 1936-1938 and Head Master of Westminster School, are buried in the vault of the Islip chapel in Westminster Abbey. He was a son of R.W. Costley-White of Gloucester and his wife Jessie (Marten) and was born on 9th November 1878. He was briefly a choirboy at Gloucester and was educated at Malvern and Oxford. Later he was an assistant master at Sherborne and was ordained and went on to Rugby school. He was Head Master at Bradfield and Principal of Liverpool College. From 1919-1937 he was Head Master at Westminster and did much to improve facilities and numbers of boys rose. He was a chaplain to George V and in 1913 married Constance Hope Ranger. They has a son Cyril (died 1979) who married Elizabeth Delmore in the Abbey in 1938, and one daughter. After leaving the Abbey he was Dean of Gloucester from 1938-1953 and he died on 5th April 1966. His wife was buried with him on 5th January 1977. The small stone reads:
