Richard Annesley, Lord Altham

The Reverend Dr Richard Annesley, Lord Altham was buried in St Benedict's chapel in Westminster Abbey on 25th November 1701, next to the monument of Cardinal Simon Langham. But he has no monument and appears never to have had an inscribed gravestone.

He was a son of Arthur, 1st Earl of Anglesey and his wife Elizabeth (co-heir of Sir James Altham, one of the Barons of the Exchequer). He was educated at Oxford and was ordained, being installed prebendary at Westminster in 1679, a post which he held until his death, and Dean of Exeter in 1681. Shortly before his death he succeeded his nephew as 3rd Baron Altham in the Irish peerage. His wife was Dorothy (Davey), who later married William Vesey.

Four children were baptised and buried in the Abbey, all dying young. His son Arthur succeeded as 4th Baron (he married at St Margaret's Westminster firstly Phillips Thompson, daughter of the 1st Lord Haversham, and secondly Mary Sheffield, daughter of the Duke of Buckingham). His brother Richard succeeded him in the title. Daughter Elizabeth married four times ie. William Greene, Maurice, 2nd Lord Haversham, Fitzwilliam White and Samuel Ashurst. Her sister Dorothy married John Greene, brother of William.
