Sir George and Stanhope Bartley
In the north porch of St Margaret's church Westminster is a memorial window to Sir George Bartley, banker and politician. The figures in the window show St George and St Christopher and a central figure of Jesus with three children. The inscription reads:
To the Glory of God and in memory of Sir George Christopher Trout Bartley K.C.B. born 22nd November 1842 died 13th September 1910 this window was dedicated by his wife and children 22 November 1911.
Below this is a brass remembering one of his sons:
In memory of Stanhope Cole Bartley Captain R.A. [Royal Artillery] youngest son of the above and Lady Bartley killed in action in France 12th March 1916.
Sir George was a son of Robert Bartley and his wife Julia (Lucas). He helped found the National Penny Bank, was an assistant director of science and a writer on social questions. His wife was Mary daughter of Sir Henry Cole and they had four sons, including Stanhope and Douglas, and one daughter. He was buried near his home at Holtye in Sussex.
