Sir Richard Corbet

In St Margaret's Church Westminster is a monument to Sir Richard Corbet, attributed to sculptor Jasper Latham. In 1708, according to a guidebook, this was at the east end of the south aisle but it has been moved and is now at the west end of the north aisle. The inscription reads:

Sacred to the memory. Hereunder lyeth the body of Sr. Richard Corbet of Longnor in the county of Salop. [Shropshire] Baronet, who married Victoria one of the daughters and co-heires of Sr. William Uvedale of Wickham in ye county of Southampton Kt. by whom he left one son and three daughters. He departed this life the 1st of August 1683 in the 43rd year of his age

He was baptised on 2nd September 1640, a son of Edward and Anne (Newport) and became 2nd Baronet of Leighton in Montgomeryshire (Wales) and Longnor Hall in Shropshire. In 1653 he succeeded his grandfather to the title and was a Fellow of the Royal Society and Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury. Of his four sons only one survived him.
