Thomas Turton

Dr Thomas Turton was Dean of Westminster from 1842-1845 but he has no memorial at Westminster Abbey. He was buried at Kensal Green cemetery in London. He was the son of Thomas and Anne and was born on 25th February 1780 in Yorkshire. Educated at Cambridge university he became Lucasian professor of mathematics and professor of Divinity. After being a prebendary at Lincoln cathedral and at Peterborough he was Dean of Peterborough from 1830-1842. He was an author and a composer, two of his tunes appearing in Hymns Ancient and Modern. In 1845 he was elected Bishop of Ely and died on 7th January 1864.
