The St Margaret's Choristers make history

The St Margaret’s Choristers made history on Wednesday 8th May when they sang Evensong in Westminster Abbey for the first time.
Performing with the musicians of the St Margaret's Consort, they became the first girl choristers of the Abbey to raise their voices as part of the tradition of daily worship offered here for centuries.
The service, on the eve of Ascension Day, included music by Marenzio, Smith, Stanford and Haydn, sung under the direction of Greg Morris, Director of Music at St Margaret's Church.
The St Margaret’s Choristers began meeting last September. The choir is made up of twenty girls aged 11 – 17, drawn from schools across London, who receive free singing tuition as well as a generous scholarship. They have the opportunity to perform some of the great cathedral music repertoire, helping to sustain the Abbey's worshipping life and mission.
The choristers are currently singing fortnightly at the Sunday evening service in St Margaret's, and will commence performing weekly during term time from September. Wednesday's Evensong in the Abbey will be followed by further services later this year.
