George Goring, 1st Earl of Norwich

George Goring, 1st Earl of Norwich, was buried in St John the Baptist's chapel in Westminster Abbey on 14th January 1663. He has no monument but his name,and that of his wife, who was buried on 15th July 1648, are inscribed on a modern stone in front of the Popham monument in this chapel.

He was born on 28th April 1585, a son of George Goring and his wife Anne (Denny). After education at Cambridge he travelled abroad and by 1608 had married Mary, daughter of Edward Neville, 6th Baron Abergavenny. They had three sons and seven daughters (eldest son George was also an M.P. and became a ruthless general during the English Civil War and his younger son Charles suceeded to the earldom). In 1628 he was created Baron Goring and in 1644 Earl of Norwich. He was Member of Parliament for Lewes in Sussex and Stamford and a gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Prince Henry, vice chamberlain to Queen Henrietta Maria, master of the horse and captain of the guard among other posts.
