John Fox

John Fox was buried on 27th September 1623 in the north transept (the broad aisle) of Westminster Abbey but he has no memorial or marker. He was made a prebendary of Westminster in 1606. His father was John, a citizen and goldsmith of London (died 1597) who had built and founded the Free Grammar School at Dean near Cockermouth in Cumbria. His mother was Joan and, as he was unmarried, he left his money to the children of his brother Richard and to his sisters Alice (wife of Edward Herne) and Ellen (wife of Francis Ram). Educated at Cambridge university he was made a prebendary of St Paul's cathedral in 1591 and was rector of Hanwell in Middlesex.
