Symposium: The End of the Elizabethan eras

Dr David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, 16th century historian and author of Reformation and Religious Identity in Cambridge (Boydell and Brewer, 2007) in dialogue with Gary Gibbon, political editor of Channel 4 News, pondering the ends of the Elizabethan eras of the 16th and 21st centuries.

Both periods saw the disappearance of old orthodoxies with the Reformation in the 16th and the challenge to progressive liberalism in the 21st. Both could be characterised as seeing active minorities of ‘true believers’ gaining the upper hand and new zealotries taking hold as old economic and social certainties seem to disappear.
