Outreach workshops

Schools in eligible London boroughs can bring faith and history to life with our outreach workshops and linked tours of Westminster Abbey. A member of our team will visit your school and deliver a session guaranteed to educate and entertain, and then the pupils visit the Abbey for a free themed tour, including a visit to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries.

A Pilgrim's Tale

Pilgrimage has always been an integral part of life and worship at Westminster Abbey. Under the guidance of Geoffrey Chaucer, the famous medieval poet, your pupils will be transported on a journey around the world's pilgrimage sites, exploring the beliefs and practices of Christianity and other faiths. The session includes the chance to make a medieval-style pilgrim's badge.

Suitable for: KS1 and KS2

We recommend booking this workshop alongside either our RE Pilgrimage Tour or Abbey Highlights Tour. See our tours listings for further information on these.

A question and answer session for primary school students at Westminster Abbey

Monarchy – How to film your own coronation

Your pupils will travel back in time to the year 1953 to help our television director film the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II. How can they avoid the disasters of previous coronations and make sure this one goes without a hitch? The children will learn how Westminster Abbey became the nation’s Coronation Church before creating their own ceremony. By the end of the session, the children will have explored the different roles within a coronation, and made their own coronation crown.

Suitable for: KS1 and KS2

We recommend booking this workshop alongside either our Kings, Queens & Coronations Tour or Abbey Highlights Tour. See our tours listings for further information on these.

The Last Anglo-Saxons

Edward the Confessor lies on his deathbed and the kingdom is in crisis - who is the rightful heir? Guided by an Anglo-Saxon, your pupils will hear of the fates of previous kings and decode secret messages in Anglo-Saxon runes, before holding their own royal council to consider the case for each claimant. Perhaps, after all, it may not even be an Anglo-Saxon! The workshop culminates with your pupils making their own Anglo-Saxon runic stones.

Suitable for: KS1 and KS2

We recommend booking this workshop alongside either our Edward the Confessor Tour or Abbey Highlights Tour. See our tours listings for further information on these.

Parliament Power

The year is 1647. With King Charles a prisoner of Parliament, it would seem the English Civil War has finally ended. But with the Monarch, Parliament and the Church fighting for pre-eminence, only the bravest would invite a Puritan into their classroom. Your pupils will work alongside a zealot of the age to investigate the rules that underpin our liberty, and create their own book of laws to try and bring peace to a world of chaos. Finally, the pupils will make their own seal to make their laws truly official.

Suitable for: KS1 and KS2

We recommend booking this workshop alongside either our British Values Tour or Abbey Highlights Tour. See our tours listings for further information on these.
