Gilbert and Hugh Elliot

Gilbert Elliot Murray-Kynynmound, Earl of Minto, and his brother Hugh are buried in the north transept of Westminster Abbey.  The inscription, which was renewed in 1975, reads:

Gilbert Elliot, Earl of Minto eldest son of Sir Gilbert Elliot, Baronet. Born April 23 1751, Viceroy of Corsica 1794, Envoy Extraordinary to Vienna 1779, President of the Board of Control 1806, Governor General of India 1806-13, created Baron Minto of Minto and Viscount Melgund and Earl of Minto. Died June 21 1814. Hugh Elliot second son of Sir Gilbert Elliot, Baronet, born April 6 1752, British Minister at the courts of Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dresden and Naples, Governor of the Leeward Islands 1809, Governor of Madras 1814. Died December 1 1830

His mother was Agnes (Dalrymple) and he was born in Edinburgh and educated in France and at Oxford. He became a barrister and Member of Parliament and was created Earl of Minto in co. Roxburgh. In 1777 he married Anna Maria Amyand (who died 1829). His son Gilbert was born in 1782 and succeeded to the title.

Hugh married Charlotte von Krauth but they were divorced. The name of his second wife is not known but they had six sons and three daughters.
